Winston Saved My Life: How StreetVet’s Accredited Hostel Scheme Keeps Pets and People Together

A Veteran’s Journey from Homelessness to Hope with their Loyal Companion

Discover how Winston became a lifeline, and how the StreetVet Accredited Hostel Scheme is giving hope, dignity, and a future to those experiencing homelessness with their pets across the UK.

With up to 1 in 4 people experiencing homelessness owning a pet, currently, only 21% of homelessness services in England reported that they accept dogs, and even fewer allow cats or other companion animals.

StreetVet is challenging and helping to change this landscape by supporting hostels, temporary accommodation providers, and other homelessness services to become pet-inclusive.

When Winston, a gentle and loyal dog, entered his owner’s life, neither could have imagined how vital their bond would become.

A military veteran living with a disability, Winston’s owner faced eviction and was repeatedly turned away from rented accommodation; some refused to accept pets, others rejected him due to his benefits. With nowhere else to go, they ended up living in a tent.

Their turning point came when a local outreach team in Somerset found them sleeping rough and referred them to Arc Inspiring Lives, a support service providing accommodation for those who have become homeless. Arc is also one of 61 StreetVet Accredited Sites across the UK that welcomes those experiencing homelessness with their pet. For the first time, Winston and his owner were welcomed together. The hostel recognises the importance of keeping pets and people united, offering safety, comfort, companionship, and a path toward a more permanent housing solution.

But Winston is more than a companion. He gives structure, comfort, and emotional support.

He listens without judgment and has helped anchor his owner’s mental health. “Winston saved my life,” he says, and he means it. Winston is now officially part of his recovery and support plan.

StreetVet’s Hostel & Day Centre Accreditation Scheme is changing the landscape for those experiencing homelessness with their pets. It works with hostels, councils, temporary accommodation providers and other homelessness support services to empower them to say “yes” to both pet and person. It removes the harsh choice between shelter, access to vital service, and giving up a beloved companion.

Winston may never know the enormous impact he has made on his owner's life, but thanks to StreetVet, he didn’t have to do it alone.
