Nuala Summerfield is an RCVS, European and American Specialist in Veterinary Cardiology with more than 20 years’ experience in specialist practice, academia and clinical teaching. She graduated from the University of Edinburgh and completed a residency in Veterinary Cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, achieving specialist status in 2002. Since then, she has worked in both university and private referral settings across the UK and Europe, developing particular expertise in canine acquired heart disease, congestive heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias.

Nuala is passionate about collaborative, practical cardiology that supports vets in delivering high-quality care within their own practices. In 2017, she co-founded Virtual Veterinary Specialists (VVS), an innovative telemedicine platform designed to make specialist expertise more accessible to first opinion veterinary teams through real-time case collaboration, imaging support and education.

Alongside her clinical work, Nuala is heavily involved in postgraduate veterinary teaching and mentoring, with a strong focus on practical echocardiography and helping vets build confidence in the diagnosis and management of cardiac disease. She is committed to making specialist knowledge more accessible and clinically relevant for vets working in general practice.
